EVALUATION

I am very pleased with my own personal development through the course of this unit.

I designed and produced a website from scratch, which is something I never would have believed I would be capable of, and I am pleased with the final design, I believe it looks professional, and simple but interesting. I now feel confident enough to develop a website to display my work as an online PDP, which I feel would be more professional than a Blog.

I am also really pleased that part of our brief was to create a CV; I found the lecture we received on how to produce a creative CV really helpful, and I now have a part time sales assistant job at Oasis. The manager commented on how it was really nice to read an interesting looking CV and how he thought it reflected my personality.

For the Photo Shoot itself, I had learnt from previous units not to rely completely on one person for collaborative purposes, so when my photographer let me down the day before my shoot I was able to recover and get a replacement, and when one of my assistants didn’t turn up, we were covered as I had another assistant. This was invaluable to me, and made the experience less stressful and more enjoyable, and is definitely something I will carry through to future shoots.

The opportunity to conduct a photo shoot in the Ultralounge at Selfridges, really made me grow as a stylist/art director. It placed me into a professional context, and therefore my preparation for the shoot and my conduct on the day was really professional and efficient, and contributed towards getting some really varied images. It was a great experience to collaborate with people already in the industry, and gave me more of a sense of the fashion industry and of the professional world.

This was the first photo shoot in which I have used more than one model, and I really enjoyed it, and in fact preferred it. The girls worked really well together, brought contrasting looks to the photos, and bounced off each other, and helped keep the mood really exciting and buzzing. It has helped me make the decision that I would definitely use 2, or even more models for future shoots, which is a really exciting prospect for me.

The greatest positive I take away from this unit, is the relationships I have developed with the students I collaborated with. I really enjoyed working with my photographer, Leanne. We worked really well together, bouncing ideas from both a fashion and photography perspective off each other, and keeping the shoot buzzing, exciting and new. Since then I have styled a menswear shoot with her, which was a really useful experience, as I have never styled menswear before, so I have learnt a lot. We have plans to collaborate on shoots in future, as we both really love working with each other and I cant wait to push my own personal skills and boundaries with her. I have also created a strong relationship with the makeup artist I used, Charlotte. I have known Charlotte for 3 years, as she is a friend from the BA Model making course, but she has recently undertaken a part time makeup course at AUCB, and after seeing her makeup work, I decided she would be perfect for my shoot. She did some really great makeup, and I would love to use her again, it is unfortunate that she is soon due to be finishing her course, but I will make the most use out of her that I can while she is here. I also loved working with my models. Jacqui is a brilliant model that is with LMP modeling agency, who I have used before, and also a very close friend. We are very comfortable working together, and as she is on BA Photography, we have plans to collaborate soon in that context. Josi was a new face, also from LMP modeling agency, which I met at a LMP social event that I accompanied Jacqui to. She is young, and has a very strong look, and although she was slightly shy at first, she soon came out of her shell, got on really well with the team, and I would jump at the chance to use her again.

I have never created props and accessories for a shoot before, and they looked a lot more effective and professional than I first thought they would. We got some really interesting images using the hula-hoops, and also the masks and the ruffs, and this is something I will definitely develop upon in the future, to create more interesting and creative images.

The one element of my shoot that I really wanted to include, but which eventually was not possible, was including the public in the photo shoot. The ultra lounge was not as busy as I had anticipated, and unfortunately members of the public were not keen to take part. I decided it was better to discuss the shoot with the public rather than try to persuade them to take part, and run the risk of making them feel uncomfortable, therefore detracting from the professionalism of the shoot.

I feel that as an art director, I have really grown. I feel a lot more confident when directing models and other members of the team, and particularly with this shoot I was very organized, and knew what I was doing for the duration with lots of fresh ideas for poses and interaction. I believe in myself as a stylist/art director a lot more since this photo shoot, and have since lined up collaboration opportunities with different photographers and models. I have definitely grown as a stylist and also as a person.

The book

I sent the images off to blurb.com today, and I will hopefully receive the book in 2 weeks, just in time for my deadline! Its a brilliant website, with a programme you download, so that you can put your images in some really interesting layouts. I cant wait to see the finished product!

SUCCESS!

The shoot went really well! We got some really great images and got a lot of interest from members of the public, so it was a definate success. Oh, and bonus, we met Annie Lennox! Photos have been uploaded to the facebook group, here is the link:

Preparation for the shoot

THE PHOTO SHOOT IS TOMORROW!

And I have had a bit of a drama today, but its all sorted! I called the members of my team to check that everyone had their coach tickets, and Joe told me that he couldn't afford the transport, and that he would prefer if I could get someone else to be my photographer, as he has a deadline he would like to spend the day working towards. So, I emailed all the photography students I could think of, and Leanne Lim-Walker stepped forward to save the day! And offered to pay for half of her coach ticket. Here are some examples of her work:

So my team consists of myself (art director/stylist) Leanne Lim-Walker (photographer) Charlotte Millerchip (makeup artist) Jacqui Boulton and Josi Slater (models) Izzie Dellar and Becci Melville (Assistants).
Myself, Leanne, Charlotte, Josi, Izzie and Becci are getting the coach from Bournemouth to London, and we are meeting Jacqui in London.
I have emailed Zoe to ensure all the details are okay for tomorrow and to enquire about a room to store our gear and about model release forms, and both are fine, so I'm really excited, and I'm off to get an early night, as the coach leaves at 6.15am!

Metal Maks

My house mate, and 3rd year Model Maker, has made 4 metal masks for the photo shoot. 2 of them are made from thin aluminium wire, and 2 from thicker, slightly rusty wire. I have attached ribbon to them, to tie them to the face with.

I've been busy busy making props

I haven't put a post on here for a while, as I've been really busy trying to produce the props for the photo shoot. I have now finished papier macheing the crinoline and the hula hoops, making 2 mixed material Giles Deacon style ruffs, 2 classic style ruffs, a ribbon ruff, a feather ruff, a pom pom ruff, 2 chiffon/net headbands, 2 feathered venetian masks and 2 origami bow ties. See below:

MAKEUP ARTIST: Charlotte Millerchip

A friend of mine from BA Model Making has recently started the makeup course part time at AUCB, and after having a look at her portfolio, I decided she would be perfect to recreate the costume makeup I would like for the models on my shoot. Here are some photos of her work:

PHOTOGRAPHER: Joe Stephens

I have found a photographer for the photoshoot. His name is Joe, and he has a really high profile on the photography scene in Bournemouth. He normally takes photographs of what he calls 'real people' in and around Bournemouth, particularly on the alternative clubbing scene. His photos have a documentary element to them, he is all about capturing the action, which I believe would be interesting for my photos. Here are some images of his work:

MY MODELS!

I am going to use 2 models for the event, Jacqueline Boulton and Josi Slater. They are both with LMP modelling agency in Bournemouth, and are both very tall and glamorous, which is perfect for the look that I wish to have for the photoos (tall glamorous model like figures, who look like they have had a struggle).

A little bit more photoshop experimentation

For this image, I used a photo from the outcome of the last unit, and scanned in a sheet of crumpled brown paper. I then altered the hue/saturation and opacity of the image, merged the two images together, and altered the opacity of the scan. The end result is really effective, and it might be really interesting to edit some photos from the photo shoot using this technique.

Experiementing with web page layouts - Gallery section

The idea of the above two pages, is that the opening screen of the gallery section is made up of black thumnails, with the rollover function, so that when the user rolls over each thumbnail, it appears in full colour.

This page follows on from the above two... when the user clicks on a thumbnail, the page of thumbnails shifts to one side, and a full size image follows it.

This is another idea, following on from the thumbnails screen. When you click on a thumbnail, this new screen appears, which is almost in an online magazine format, and allows you to scroll through the images using the arrow icons on the screen.

Website Research

These are the 3 most inspirational websites I found on the Flash Web awards website.

The one on the left is the opening screen from Lasse Pederson's
(an editorial stylist) website. I really like the simplicity of it,
being a simple full screen photograph, and rollover text.

The image on the left is from photographer Tony D'Orio's
website. It consists of a full screen of thumbnails, which have the
rollover function, and when you click on one, the larger version
slides in from one
of the sides.

The image below is from the We're All Fans: Grammy Awards website. The nominees each have a page, which consists of a collage of a photo of them, made up from
videos, photographs and tweets.

Sourcing: H&M Jacket

I was in H&M on friday, and saw this jacket, which I thought would be perfect for the styling of my shoot. It costs £19.99, and the stripes sum up the big top feel I wish to portray.

Papier Mache Chairs for Zoe

On friday evening, Zoe's boyfriend dropped off 6 chairs, which I had volunteered to papier mache for her. I started doing this over the weekend, and have so far finished 1 chair, with 2 layers of newspaper. It looks really effective, and I look forward to seeing the chairs in their setting at Selfridges.

Paper sample: Harlequin print

Typography

I went on dafont.com to see if there were any typography faces I could download, which would be good for the website, and this is what I came up with. There are some really good typefaces here, ranging from the more obvious, circus inspired ones to typewriter ones and distorted ones.

Vogue: March 2010

These photos are from Tim Walkers spread for the March 2010 issue of British Vogue. It is entitled 'China White', and features examples of the new seasons 'white' trend. I find the balloons and the pleated silks inspirational, as well as the candyfloss hair, and the ruffs and folds in the fabric.

Lula, Girl of my Dreams: Issue Ten

The first spread in Issue 10 of Lula, is entitled, 'Once Upon A Time' and features a woman's arms, with ruffs around the wrists, and harlequin-print painted arms. It is very crafty and paper based, and I find it very inspirational to me for my work in this project. It has made me realise that it would be really interesting to put ruffs on different parts of the body, other than just around the neck. It works really well in this spread, as an accessory on the wrist.

Photoshop Experimentation

In our Friday computer workshop session, I decided to work with photoshop, layering text on top of images. I really love the effect of this, particularly with the sheet music layered over the photograph of my great grandmother. I also decided to experiment with typography, taking the image I found on deviantart as my inspiration, I attempted to recreate it. I really like this as well, and it could be nice to use on the website.
The writing/music layered over the photographs is an effect I would like to possibly put into practice with the final prints for the book.

The Circus- Typography example

I stumbled across this image on deviantart.com, and found it really inspirational to me for this unit and very effective as an image/a piece of writing. The typography is beautiful, like handwritten calligraphy in different fonts and shapes, and I love the different tones and textures of the background, almost parchment-like. This type of image would look great on the website, or on flyers I may hand out to promote the website.

Crystin Moritz

Crystin Moritz is a german fashion photographer, whom I found on Flickr. She has some really great photos on her website, in particular I like her Lola series, which is really relevant to this unit. The styling of the model is inspired by clowns, yet Crystin has made the photos look sad and somewhat twisted by placing her in a dim location, used dark make-up, and by using poses which appear somewhat shy and reclusive. The images are really interesting, the styling possibly slightly too obvious for my tastes, but she has painted a story through the images, and given a character which should normally be so colourful and joyful, a dark edge.
